Kennel Floor Paint Vs Epoxy Floors for Veterinary Clinics

Over 90.5 million households across the United States own a pet*, making us a nation of animal lovers.

Part of pet ownership is caring for your furry friend when they are sick or unwell, and responsible pet owners want their animal cared for in a clean, professional environment.

Veterinary clinic managers know that they need to present a hygienic and welcoming space in order to attract clients. A great place to start that effort is building from the floor up. But which flooring option will give you the best value and years of durable service?

Kennel floor paint is one of the most common flooring solutions for the pet care industry, and it’s easy to see why: it’s inexpensive, quick to dry, and easy to clean.

Sounds perfect, right?

However, there are some drawbacks to using kennel floor paint that you may not be aware of. Read on to discover why kennel floor paint can prove to be a costly mistake in the long run.

Sanitary flooring for kennels and clinics

Preparing your existing kennel floor for a coating of epoxy paint can be a time-consuming task. If the floor is inadequately cleaned, the dirt and moisture can prevent the paint from adhering sufficiently.

The paint also needs to be mixed correctly and rolled onto the floor at the correct temperature to avoid “bubbling” during the curing phase. The bubbles that form are microscopic, but they trap microbes and germs inside them, which can cause bad odors and an unsanitary environment for pets.

Everlast® Epoxy flooring for veterinary clinics differs from floor paint as it includes an EPA-registered antimicrobial component that impedes the growth of microorganisms. This protects your floors from bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and pathogens and makes the environment a safer environment for pets.

Our floors are also seamless and nonporous, which makes them easy to clean if any four-legged patients have a little accident. Pet waste cannot penetrate the layers and create nasty smells or breed germs, and it can simply be wiped away and disinfected with ease.

Solvent-based kennel floor paint

Epoxy paints are designed to be applied onto the substrate of your existing floor with a roller. To make the paint “rollable,” it is thinned using solvents—but this can weaken the bond between the concrete substrate and the paint coating.

Even when applied thoroughly and in several layers,  painted epoxy floors can be damaged by oils and solvents. Worse still, alkaline salts in the concrete and mortar can cause efflorescence damage, which is where the paint remains tacky, even after it has cured.

Sticky paint and paws are not a good mix – the last thing a reputable veterinary clinic wants is for the pets in their care to feel uncomfortable with standing or laying down on the floor.

Everlast® Epoxy flooring is a practical alternative for pet care establishments, as our unique formula is 160 mm thick and can be trowled on over most substrates. Once fully cured, our epoxy resin floors are nonsticky, comfortable, and safe for animals to walk on.

A welcoming environment for pets and owners

Painted floor coatings can look great when first applied. They are available in a variety of colors and designs to fit seamlessly with your clinic’s branding and style.

However, after just a short time, painted kennel floors can start to chip and peel. This is due to the brittleness of floor paints, which makes them prone to cracking and flaking. Soon, your spotless floor will be looking tired, unhygienic, and in need of repair.

In contrast, our epoxy resin floors are flexible and resistant to cracking but are still available in a huge range of colors to ensure you get all the advantages of a great-looking floor without any of the challenges.
