Most commercial kitchens are a buzzing hive of activity. You’ve got line cooks zipping by with boiling hot pans, wait staff charging through with what seems like dozens of plates in their hand, and grease, oil, food, and water flying all over the place. It’s no wonder that it takes an army to clean up the mess afterwards in a commercial kitchen.
If the kitchen environment isn’t equipped to take this abuse, it will quickly break down. Which is why it’s crucial to have resilient floor and wall material in your commercial kitchen.
With your kitchen floor being your defensive line and taking the majority of the damage, it needs to be solid and strong… easily capable of handling boiling hot liquids, long-standing water pools, heavy objects falling onto it, and endless foot traffic.
But what about your walls?
In many cases, they take a similar beating as your floor. If a stove is constantly spitting oil onto the wall, it can cause grease to build up.
If you’re dishwashing station often resembles a swimming pool due to overzealous employees… you’re setting your kitchen up for potential mold damage (and attracting a nosey health inspectors attention…).

With all that grease on the walls… you’re in for a nasty treat if a fire breaks out around your stove. The wall could act like conduit and spread the fire around your kitchen via the greasy walls.
Now, to be fair, this is an unlikely scenario to happen. You’ve got to have some serious management issues before something like this happens (but it has happened in the past).
But what does happen often is that, if a kitchen becomes too dirty, a health inspector might happen to pop by unannounced, see the poor state of affairs, and start poking around with a magnifying glass.

This is especially true with restaurant kitchen flooring requirements. I cannot emphasize this enough, a commercial kitchen floor is a high impact environment.
The amount of abuse a commercial kitchen floor has to take… it’s probably one of the worst areas in any building… in any industry.
Which is why you need to be careful when selecting which material you’re going to install onto your floor and walls.
At the very least, make sure the material meets these commercial kitchen flooring requirements;
- It’s a seamless floor. Grout lines, heat-welded seams, and other openings are the number one reason floors fail. Seams are the weakest link.
- That its a thick floor. Even though some epoxy paint manufacturers claim their material is good for commercial kitchen floors… it’s not… simply because it’s a paint. A thin coat that will wear off.
- Its waterproof ALL the way through the floor and not just as a top coat. Again, a top coat will wear off and now you’re stuck with an exposed floor that attracts all kinds of bacteria.
- A non slip flooring for commercial kitchens without turning the floor into a pain to clean.
- And finally, make sure it’s low maintenance… preferably without using a mop, as they just move dirt around for the most part.
