Why has my floor failed?

Installing a new flooring system at your business is a big investment—one you need to get right the first time. We’ve helped many organizations rectify their flooring disasters after they contacted us asking, “Why has my floor failed?”

After installation, vinyl or tiled floors can look very attractive, yet after just a few short months, you may notice cracked or curled tiles that no longer adhere to the substrate properly. This is a red flag warning that there is a problem that can rapidly escalate and cause disruption to your business. Read on to learn how to avoid the pitfalls of installing an inferior floor and how to recognize the signs of floor failure.

What causes a floor to fail?

It’s difficult to know everything that goes on below the surface of your floor—and it’s often not until the flooring fails that the subfloor gets attention—but there are a few common signs to look out for that indicate you need to be worried about your flooring.

Excessive moisture

Moisture is the primary cause of many flooring failures and can be further compounded if the issue is not rectified quickly. Installing a floor in excessively humid conditions or allowing water to seep between the joints of tiles and penetrate the substrate can all cause floors to bulge or buckle.

To avoid this happening at your facility, choose an Everlast® Epoxy resin floor, which contains a compound that bonds tightly together and is designed to keep moisture and other corrosive materials from damaging the subfloor.

Unlike tiles, an epoxy floor provides a continuous, seamless surface that provides water and moisture protection for the long lifespan of the floor.

Poor floor maintenance

A maintained workplace floor keeps buildings looking clean, tidy, and attractive to visitors and can also help prevent work-related accidents.

Many floor surfaces are difficult to maintain: concrete can become pitted and cracked, carpets need regular vacuuming, shampooing, and drying, and tiles eventually lift and need to be replaced. All of this maintenance takes time and money—but all too often, proper floor maintenance is not on the list of priorities for a busy organization.

An epoxy resin floor is a flooring system to enjoy: it needs very little maintenance to keep it in like-new condition. There is no scrubbing, polishing, or buffing involved—simply clean the floor at the end of the working day using our Everlast® Floor Care system, then rinse and squeegee any excess water down the drain. No fuss, no hassle.

Inferior installation

We hate to say it, but there are companies out there that give the flooring industry a bad name. If your flooring system has been installed incorrectly, it won’t take long for signs of floor failure to become apparent.

We suggest acting fast, and contacting the company to take remedial action before the warranty expires (most offer just a year’s warranty). Sadly, some badly installed floors will need to be ripped out and replaced.

Our installers are professional and experienced in their craft and take pride in delivering floors that will stand the test of time. We back up this claim with a twenty-year warranty—a promise that our floors will provide a waterproof surface and will not have excessive wear for two decades from the date of installation.

Chemicals can cause damage

In workplaces where oils, grease, and chemicals are used, there will inevitably be spillages. If your floor isn’t able to deal with this harsh treatment, you could be looking at an expensive floor replacement sooner than you had hoped.

Acids, alkalis, and harsh detergents can all cause damage to floors, but an Everlast® Epoxy floor resists these substances and does not bear signs of deterioration or pitting after accidents do occur. We make this claim confidently, as our floors are rigorously tested with full seven-day saturation in chemicals (unlike most other floors that are only tested for twenty-four hours).
