What does the CDC say about pool area health and safety?
Americans make more than 300 million trips to the pool or other swimming areas each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
It warns that, in some places, swimming “and other water-related activities” can lead to injuries.
And it says one in every eight pools is closed immediately during routine inspection because of health and safety issues.
Last year, in an effort to tackle these and other problems, the CDC published its Model Aquatic Health Code – a series of guidelines aimed at “keeping people and pools healthy and safe”.
The code, of course, covers in detail pools themselves – including the best materials for things like pool walls and floors.
And it talks about best practice for the surrounding “aquatic venue”.
Unsurprisingly, it recommends non-slip flooring.
But how do you make sure the floor deck in a pool area is genuinely slip resistant?
Various types of “aquatic flooring”, including sheet rubber and rubber tiles, are marketed as slip-resistant.
And when they’re first installed they probably serve this purpose.
The problem is that, over time, many of these flooring types can come apart or peel and become a safety hazard (including, ironically, a trip hazard).
This situation is not helped by chlorine from the pool eating away at the flooring.

The CDC also says that swimming can lead to the spread of disease.

The CDC talks specifically about different types of bacteria including Escherichia Coli – or E-Coli.
E-Coli can cause problems including diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, urinary tract infections and pneumonia.
