Common questions about industrial epoxy flooring

Epoxy flooring is a great choice for any industrial facility, and while we admit we are biased, there is a long list of benefits that support the choice to use epoxy flooring to create a solid foundation for your business.

However, we understand that you, as a professional facility manager, may have several questions to ask before you can make an informed decision about the best flooring system for your business.

To help with the decision-making process, we’ve brought together some of the most common questions our team is asked about industrial epoxy flooring.

How long will an epoxy flooring system last?

The lifespan of an epoxy floor depends on many factors, such as the quality of the resin and the hazards the surface is subjected to.

We always advise asking your contractor how thick the resin layers are in the floors they install—most are roughly 60 mm deep. Our floors contain the correct amount of aggregate and lots of the best epoxies on the market for a longer-lasting floor that is at least 160 mm thick.

Another question to ask potential contractors is how rigorously the floors are tested—and if your floor is likely to be exposed to certain chemicals or oils, check that it will not have a detrimental effect on the surface of your floor that will shorten its lifespan.

To make it easy for you, take a look at the extensive list of chemicals, detergents, and oils that our floors are subjected to in an intensive 7-day saturation test.

Is epoxy flooring better than a concrete floor?

A traditional concrete floor might seem like the perfect flooring choice, but concrete isn’t as durable as it looks. Concrete is a very porous material that allows moisture and bacteria to seep through the layers and attack the substrate.

Damp floors are a breeding ground for germs and will make the surface prone to cracking and pitting. An epoxy floor is a seamless, waterproof option that can be easily laid directly over concrete (or many other substrates) to provide a longer-lasting and more sanitary solution. For this reason—and because an epoxy floor is aesthetically superior—we’d recommend it over concrete every time.

Are epoxy floors slippery?

This is a great question—and one we are frequently asked as our floors are seamless, light-reflective, and have a glazed finish. We can understand how these factors might make them look slippery! But they are not. Our floors are manufactured using small marble chips, which have an abrasive finish.

We’ve installed our nonslip floors in areas that pose a slip hazard, such as swimming pools and bathrooms, and even in commercial kitchens where oil and fats can end up on the floor and cause staff to slip and injure themselves.

If slip resistance is a particular concern for your facility, we recommend an additive to the top glaze that offers a textured, sandpaper-like finish for increased slip resistance.

Is an epoxy floor easy to maintain?

We don’t know anyone who looks forward to cleaning the floor in an industrial setting, so we’ve made our flooring easy to clean with minimal effort. Because the surface is waterproof, dirt and debris can be easily removed with detergent and water.

Excess water and all the grime can then be squeegeed toward the nearest drain for a fast, simple cleaning routine. A daily clean will ensure your industrial epoxy flooring looks new for many years to come.

In areas where the floor is exposed to chemicals, the surface can withstand pressure washing for a more thorough clean.

If you want to say goodbye to back-breaking scrubbing, buffing, and polishing, an epoxy floor is the right choice.
